Valentine’s day is a holiday that has extended commercially in the modern era to a large scale. A special day to express love and affection to those around you that you love in your life. But where has Valentine’s day come from?
Also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, this holiday is celebrated annually on February 14. It originated as a Christian feast day honouring the Christian martyr Saint Valentine. Through later folk tales and traditions, it has evolved and led to the creation of formal messages and gifts that are present today. This is first seen in the United States in the 19th century with the first commercial cards being printed for the holiday. There are many things that have become associated with this day including Cupid, the Roman god of love. Cupid is depicted on many cards and gifts that are given out on the day along with flowers, particularly red roses, which are a symbol of beauty and love.
In conjunction with gifts that have become allied with the holiday, there are also colours that are a staple to the 14th.
Historically, red and white have been at the forefront of people’s minds when they picture Valentine’s day.
Red represents love and white represents innocence and purity. With the two mixed together, it reveals a gentler kind of love in the colour pink.
These are great colours to use in creating an outfit for this time of year. A perfect way to incorporate these colours is in the form of a scarf. Scarves are excellent for making an outfit seem complete or to even add that little extra to make a statement.
