The symbolic language of flowers has been recognised for hundreds of years in many countries. In Victorian times it became a popular pastime, and most homes had a book illustrating their meanings. Flowers were often used to deliver messages without words. Even a simple yes or no question could be answered with flowers. If flowers were handed over with the right hand it was yes and with the left a no! If the flowers were given upside down the meaning would be the opposite of what was traditionally meant. If the flowers were tied to the left the symbolism applied to the giver and to the right the recipient – all this to get right before you even pick what flower to gift for what meaning!
